Classroom-based digital games offer teachers a wealth of formative assessment data that they can use to improve student learning. But what supports do teachers need to harness all this information?

That’s the question behind EDC’s Playing with Data study, which explores how middle-school science teachers use digital game-based assessment data to improve student learning. Results of this research will help school districts and game developers better understand the needs of teachers as they continue to integrate digital games into middle school science instruction.

As part of the Playing with Data study, EDC staff are doing the following:

  • Working with middle-grade science teachers to revise and expand an online data-reporting dashboard
  • Conducting formative research and two pilot studies with teachers using the dashboard for the Mars Generation One digital game
  • Researching whether teachers’ use of the revised data dashboard and related resources leads to improvements in decision making and student learning
